The costs to plan for
- TfL application and licence fees — set by TfL and reviewed periodically
- Medical assessment — charged by the doctor or clinic, prices vary widely
- Enhanced DBS check — the check itself plus, if you choose, the DBS Update Service subscription
- Topographical assessment — provider and TfL fees as applicable
- SERU assessment — charged by TfL each time you sit it, so resits add up
- English requirement — cost depends on the evidence route you use
- Training and preparation — optional in principle, but the difference between one attempt and three
The cost people forget: resits
Assessment fees are charged each time you sit them. Two or three resits can quietly cost more than proper preparation would have done in the first place, and each one adds weeks to your start date.
That is the honest case for structured training: not that it guarantees anything, but that it usually reduces the number of attempts and the amount of time you spend not earning.

Costs once you are driving
Getting licensed is the start. Before you commit, work out your weekly running costs too — vehicle rental or finance, private hire insurance, fuel or charging, servicing, cleaning and any operator or platform fees.
Drivers who plan those numbers before they start tend to last far longer in the job than those who only plan the licence.
