What a mock test can and cannot do
No training provider has TfL's live questions, and anybody claiming otherwise should be treated with caution. Good mock material mirrors the topics and the scenario style of the assessment so that nothing about the format surprises you on the day.
That is genuinely valuable. Most people who struggle are not short of intelligence — they are unfamiliar with reading a scenario under time pressure and choosing the best of several plausible answers.
How to review your answers properly
The score at the end of a mock test is the least useful part of it. The review is where the learning happens.
- For every wrong answer, write one sentence explaining why the correct answer is correct
- Do the same for anything you guessed, even when you guessed right
- Group your mistakes by topic — safeguarding, equality, regulation, fares — and you will usually find one or two weak areas rather than a general problem
- Re-read those topics, then retake a fresh set rather than the same one, so you are testing understanding and not memory
Signs you are ready to book
- You score consistently well across several different practice sets, not just one
- You can explain the reasoning behind your answers out loud
- Your remaining mistakes are careless reading errors rather than knowledge gaps
- Equality, accessibility and safeguarding scenarios feel routine rather than uncomfortable
- You finish practice sets comfortably within the time you have allowed
Warning signs you are not ready yet
If your score jumps around between practice sets, you are probably recognising questions rather than understanding topics. If you find yourself thinking 'I knew that one' about answers you got wrong, slow down — that is a reading problem and it will cost you marks on the day.
It is cheaper to spend another week revising than to pay for a resit.
